What to Do After a Fire

5/12/2022 (Permalink)

  4. Contact your insurance agent. They will be able to talk you through the necessary steps, including proper documentation and emergency lodging and living expenses (keep all of your receipts.) The insurance company may assist in securing a company to help with clean up options.
  5. You may request a restoration company at this time for contents cleaning etc. Contact SERVPRO of Visalia.
  6. Another call may be to your landlord if applicable, and to your local American Red Cross.
  7. Secure the property to prevent possible looting. SERVPRO is available to assist with securing property/ Board Ups.
  8. If water hoses were used to exterminate the fire, drying your home is critical. It is best to call the professionals at SERVPRO to do water/ fire cleanups. Water can lead to mold damage if not dried properly. SERVPRO is an approved restoration contractor for many major insurance carriers and adheres to the highest standards in the restoration industry.
  9. Seek counseling if needed. Children and adults can feel a traumatic sense of loss, and may need help to avoid a lasting sense of sadness and disorientation after a house fire. For instance, knowing the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns are vital to proper restoration.

  • Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood; Fast burning, high temperatures, dry, powdery, no smeary residues.
  • Protein – Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
  • Fuel Oil Soot – Furnace Puff Backs.
  • Other Types – Tear gas, fingerprint powder and fire extinguisher residue.

Deodorization Equipment

Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that easily penetrates sites where odor-causing residues accumulate. The device can also be used to apply fungicides and disinfectants.

Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products in large volume, dense fogs suitable for confined areas. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that pair with and neutralize odor-causing particles.

Simple Step to Prevent Commercial Electrical Fires

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

As industry experts know, commercial electrical fires can be very dangerous and costly. When a commercial fire occurs, it can lead to the injury or death of the employees or customers present. Additionally, electrical fires can result in major property loss. SERVPRO of Visalia, a premier fire damage restoration company, will respond immediately to get you back in business. Luckily, most of these fires are preventable and can also be contained through maintenance of fixtures, employee training, and the facilitation of greater awareness regarding work hazards. Learn more about how to identify electrical hazards and reduce the incidence of a commercial fire by reading the following information:

Recognizing the Warning Signs

Electrical distribution systems contain several complex elements. These elements are capable of exposing commercial buildings to fire risks. Some of the areas of concern are:

  • Corroded Wiring: Wiring that is old or defective can cause electrical fires. Although all wiring can start to break down at some point, the wiring exposed to corrosive substances or the outdoor environment is subject to faster degradation. Industrial facilities, multi-tenant warehouses, and farms should be attentive to their wiring given that it can be subject to extreme exposure to the elements.
  • Circuits and Fuses: Tripped circuits and blown fuses are signs of overloaded outlets or circuits. These circuits and outlets can generate overheating and result in combustion leading to commercial electrical fires.
  • Hot Spots: Overloaded circuits, corroded wires or connectors, loose connections, faulty fuses, imbalanced electrical loading, short circuits, switches, and breakers can generate "hot spots". This is the result of the excessive heat that builds up within the electrical panels. If there is any sense that these "hot spots" could cause a commercial flare up, here is an option. Infrared thermal imaging can be operated to locate these hot spots, repairs can then be done preventing electrical shortages or breakdowns that lead to fires. Small business owners can hire licensed electricians to complete the inspection.

Electrical Distribution Equipment

Periodically, electrical distribution equipment needs to be physically inspected. The equipment should also periodically undergo thermal imaging. This work should be completed by a licensed professional. Some of the equipment requiring inspection includes:

  • electrical panels, switchboards, and switchgear
  • fuses
  • circuit breakers
  • relays and contactors
  • disconnect switches
  • motors
  • motor controls
  • transformers

The Fire Marshall periodically visits commercial buildings checking the fire extinguishers' expiration dates. The overhead sprinkler system, fire exit lighted signs and safe egress from the commercial building are all inspected. Prevention is the key.

Conclusion

Fire damage can be especially devastating for a business or commercial property. Significant water damage can be an unintended result of extinguishing a commercial fire. The fire suppression system of a commercial building(overhead fire sprinkler system) can also cause a large amount of water damage. Commercial business owners know that electrical fires negatively affect their property, the operation of the business, and the loss of revenue. However, the information above can help you take strides towards preventing these fires from happening. In the event that you find your commercial space affected by a fire, electrical or otherwise, you should know who to call to help facilitate the remediation process. As a company with extensive experience in restoring property affected by electrical fires, the professionals of SERVPRO of Visalia can provide you with the detailed assistance necessary to get your business space in working order. Sewage Clean-up and Your Business

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

A sewer backup is a nightmare for business owners in Clovis, CA. Any flooded toilet or backed-up sewage is black water. Black water is water filled with bacteria and pathogens. Because black water is dangerous for your building, it is imperative that you have experts in charge of the cleanup. Here are the four steps that they are likely to follow.

1. Respond Quickly

Always call someone at the first sign of a sewage backup at your company. A professional should respond immediately and act as soon as possible. Experts know the risk of contaminated standing water. They want to help you get rid of it quickly. Keep in mind that it only takes about 24 hours for mold or mildew to grow after a flood.

2. Inspection

Once the company arrives, they will inspect the building to judge the scope of the damage. The restoration company can use this information to design a cleanup plan. They will look for signs of water damage, mold, and trapped water.

3. Cleanup

The sewer cleanup itself can be broken into several steps. First, the non-salvageable items are disposed of. Afterward, the professionals can clean and remove salvageable contents. After the contents are taken out and cleaned, they will focus on the building itself. Demolition be necessary in order to dispose of any building materials that can retain the black water like drywall, carpeting, and padding.

4. Restoration

Once the experts clean and disinfect your business, you can focus on the restoration. This is the step where you can replace old furniture, reinstall carpets and choose new paneling. The goal is for your company to be as good as new.

Sewage clean-up is a long process but is necessary. It is important to stick with it throughout the process in order to properly avoid further damage or health concerns.

Make a Fire Escape Plan for Your Office or Business

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

It is crucial that every workplace establishes a fire escape plan. This plan should be posted throughout a building and shared with all occupants.

Evacuation Routes

Use an accurate floorplan to determine evacuation routes from every room in the structure. It is a good idea to do the following:

Identify primary and secondary routes
Ensure that routes are reasonable for occupants
Obtain equipment such as an escape ladder
Secondary routes may be less than ideal, but they should still be practical. Keep the age and physical condition of occupants in mind. Post the emergency escape plan at strategic locations.

Maintain Fire Detection and Suppression Equipment

Many commercial properties are equipped with advanced detection and suppression systems. The fire escape plan should include regular tests to ensure the functionality of detectors and sprinklers. Hardwired alarm systems should have battery backups, and it is important to replace batteries that function as a main or backup power source. Make sure that fire extinguishers are of the appropriate class and filled with suppressant.

Keep Track of Occupants

Every business should maintain a current contact list. This list should include these details:

  • Names
  • Contact information
  • Departments

Keep this list in a location where it can be accessed remotely or physically removed in the event of a fire. Every business should have a safe location where employees can gather outside. This place should be far enough away from the structure without being downwind.

A fire in a commercial building can be devastating for many reasons, be sure to keep safety training up to date to prevent further tragedy in the case of a fire.

Prevent Mold in Your Business and Know How to Detect it

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

40% of small businesses never reopen after a disaster. Much of this is due to the lack of preparedness for the building a business occupies.

Inside mold growth occurs where there is moisture. It can occur in ceilings, floors, insulation, wood, drywall, clothes, carpet and more. Some causes of excessive moisture are condensation, humidity, cooking, washing, or water from a flood, leak or spill. Mold also grows in environments with a warm temperature. Growth can begin in less than 48 hours of excessive moisture. Mold works as a decomposer, consuming the dead materials on which it grows, and it can appear to be black, blue or green in color.

The best way to prevent mold is to control moisture.

  • Fix water leaks. Any known water leaks should be fixed quickly. Have a contractor inspect for unknown leaks.
  • Limit condensation. Keep room temperatures warm and/or well insulated.
  • Reduce humidity. Open windows, install exhaust fans or use a dehumidifier.
  • Clean wet/damp areas. Any wet or damp area, materials or affected equipment should be cleaned within 48 hours to prevent mold growth.

Identifying Mold

  • Odor- Mold has a very distinct musty, and damp smell. Some would compare it to the smell of opening an old book. This is one of the most recognizable signs of mold
  • Past Flooding/Water Damage- Where there is water damage, mold has a high potential of growth

If you suspect mold in your business and need professional remediation, don’t wait, contact us today! Our staff is professionally trained to remediate mold.

Are Your Alarms Ready?

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Having functional fire alarms in your house is one if the most important things you can do to stay prepared if a fire did happen. It is a small item that often get overlooked but with just a few minutes of your time it could save yours and your families lives.

According to www.cpsc.gov, these are the reasons why smoke alarms are so important and where in the household they should be placed.

Why Are Smoke Alarms Important?

Every year in the United States, about 2,000 people lose their lives in residential fires. During a fire, smoke and deadly gases tend to spread further and faster than heat. This is one reason why most fire victims die from inhalation of smoke and toxic gases, not from burns. A majority of fatal fires happen when families are asleep because occupants are unaware of the fire until there is not adequate time to escape. A smoke alarm stands guard around the clock, and when it first senses smoke, it sounds a shrill alarm. This often allows a family the precious, but limited, time needed to escape. About two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are considered to be one of the best and least expensive means of providing an early warning of a potentially deadly fire and could reduce by almost half the risk of dying from a fire in your home.

Where Should Smoke Alarms be Installed?

Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms A smoke alarm should be installed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When installing a smoke alarm, many factors influence where you will place the alarm, including how many are to be installed.  Consider placing alarms along your escape path to assist in egress in limited-visibility conditions. In general, you should place alarms in the center of a ceiling or, if you place them on

Avoid Common Fire Hazards

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Having a fire in your home or business can happen fast and unexpected. There is something little or no warning so knowing how to help avoid it is a very smart idea.

On www.safewise.com, they offer several tips and tricks on how you can help to prevent a house fire.

Test your smoke alarms.

Properly maintain your fire alarms by testing the batteries once a month. If they’re not working, replace them immediately.

Inspect heating sources.

Regardless of what kind of primary heating you have in your home, an annual inspection will reduce your risk of fire.

Keep the stove and oven clear.

Don’t leave anything flammable near the stove or oven. Make sure curtains don’t hang over the stove, and never rest towels or a cookbook on the stove.

Stay in the kitchen.

Don't leave a hot cooking surface unattended. Whether it’s a pot on the stove or an electric griddle, you need to be close by. If you have to leave the room, take the pot off the stove or turn off the griddle first.

Check the dryer.

If you have a gas-powered dryer, have it inspected once a year to make sure all connections are secure. No matter what type of dryer you have, always clean out the lint trap after a load is finished. Regularly check behind and around the dryer for pockets of lint or items of laundry that have fallen under or behind.

Maintain cords.

Regularly check the condition of cords and watch out for frayed wires: repair or replace cords with frayed wires immediately. Electrical cords can produce heat, so don’t trap them under a rug or between furniture and the wall.

Store flammable products properly.

Many household cleaners and cosmetic products like shaving cream and hair spray are flammable. Keep flammable products away from heat, including exposure to sunlight. Designate a cool, dark cupboard for flammable products and make sure all family members know where they go.

Be careful with candles.

Never leave candles unattended and always keep them away from flammable items like blankets and curtains. Place candles in secure, tip-proof holders and extinguish them before leaving or going to sleep.

Use the fireplace responsibly.

To keep errant sparks from escaping, install a durable metal fire screen in front of your fireplace. Don’t leave a fire unattended, and give ashes ample time to cool down before disposing of them. Always place fireplace ash in a dedicated metal container that isn’t used for any other household refuse.

Keep fire extinguishers handy.

Stock key areas of your home with fire extinguishers. At the very least, keep one in the kitchen and others near high-risk areas like a fireplace. Regularly review the instructions and make sure all members of the home know how to properly use the extinguisher.

House Fires Cause More Than Just Flame Damage

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

3 Types of Damage Caused by House Fires

When you think about fire damage, you probably picture damage caused directly by flames; however, not only are flames not the only source of damage, the flames may not even cause the most damage. Smoke from the fire and water from the firefighting effort may cause as much or more damage than the fire itself.

  1. Heat and Flames

The intense heat from a fire can melt plastics, wiring, electronics, and other items. The flames can destroy property made from combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, or foam. Additionally, fires may cause chemical reactions that may create caustic substances that can damage property.

  1. Smoke

Smoke can penetrate surfaces causing fire damage from stains and smells that may be difficult to remove. Professional fire restoration services in Clovis, CA may be able to assist in removing smoke stains and smells from furniture, walls, carpets, and other items. Smoke can also contaminate items such as food and medications. These items may need to be thrown away due to safety concerns.

  1. Water

Unfortunately, the water used to extinguish fires can often cause substantial damage to property. A fire hose sprays water at rates of up to 125 gallons per minute. If you have ever accidentally flooded your bathroom, you probably know that substantial damage can be caused to your property by even relatively small amounts of water. The enormous amount of water sprayed on your property to put out a fire can cause severe property damage.

In addition to soaking into furniture, warping wood, and destroying drywall, water can damage electronics, clothing, flooring, and potentially lead to mold growth. It is important to promptly clean up water damage to avoid unnecessary additional damage.

Fire damage, water, and smoke can combine to severely damage a home during a house fire. Prompt fire restoration services can help mitigate damages and restore your property to preloss condition.

How do Professionals Remove Water from Your Flood Damaged Visalia Home?

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Storm Damage Remediation Can Help Prevent Any Secondary Damages

Whether it is due to a storm, heavy rains or any other natural disaster, a flood can cause extensive damage to your home. The key to a successful restoration after flood damage is quick water removal and preventing secondary damage.

Thankfully, professional restoration experts can take care of your flood damaged Visalia home. SERVPRO technicians can start the mitigation process as soon as we hear from you. The process of flood damage restoration is a multi-step process that can take time and needs expertise. Here are some of the steps that professionals use to remove water after a flood.

Removal of the standing water
The first step is to get the floodwater out of your home. Various equipment can be used to get this job done depending on the amount of water that needs to be removed. If the water is not quickly removed, it can continue to cause corrosion and damage with each passing hour.

The equipment that is used to pump out the standing water is called an extractor. It is used to remove the excess water from the floors, carpets, and upholstery after flood damage. Extractors can be of varying sizes and capacities. While the technicians can use portable extractors for small amounts of water, larger volumes often require truck mounted versions.

Removal of the residual moisture
Even after the standing water is removed, the residual moisture can continue to inflict damage. It is essential to get rid of this residual moisture by drying the contents of the flood-damaged home with proper equipment. The process of eliminating the excess moisture begins with the assessment of the amount of residual moisture remaining. SERVPRO technicians use various moisture testing equipment such as moisture meters and thermohygrometers to ascertain the level of the residual water.

The next step is to eliminate this excess moisture with the help of equipment such as dehumidifiers and air movers. The goal is to create a condition that allows rapid and efficient drying. The technicians establish a drying goal and work toward achieving it as soon as possible.

Call SERVPRO of Visalia today at 559-635-4292 and schedule an appointment if you find yourself dealing with a flooded home on Clovis and we will be there to help throughout the whole mitigation process.

Disaster Preparedness: Disinfecting Drinking water

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

USE ONLY WATER THAT HAS BEEN PROPERLY DISINFECTED FOR DRINKING, COOKING, MAKING ANY PREPARED DRINK, OR FOR BRUSHING TEETH

1. Use bottled water that has not been exposed to any potentially contaminated waters if it is available.

2. If you don’t have bottled water, you should boil water to make it safe. Boiling water will kill most types of disease-causing organisms that may be present. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for boiling. Boil the water for one minute, let it cool, and store it in clean containers with covers.

3. If you can’t boil water, you can disinfect it using household bleach. Bleach will kill some, but not all, types of disease-causing organisms that may be in the water. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle, and draw off the clear water for disinfection. Add 1/8 teaspoon (or 8 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach for each gallon of water, stir it well and let it stand for 30 minutes before you use it. Store disinfected water in clean containers with covers.

4. If you have a well that has been flooded, the water should be tested and disinfected after flood waters recede. If you suspect that your well may be contaminated, contact your local or state health department or agriculture extension agent for specific advice.

SERVPRO of Visalia Technicians Have Safety in Mind After Water Damage in Your Home

3/10/2022 (Permalink)

Sometimes, a Visalia water damage case may prove so severe as to warrant a quarantine or exclusion zone within your home. While we do not make these calls lightly, SERVPRO has to institute such safety precautions for some situations to protect both you and your home while we conduct restorations. While our technicians are typically more than able to explain the full reasoning behind such precautions, it might pay off to know what situations can commonly lead to this decision.

Electrical Hazards

If your home has water damage in a broad area or standing water in a room, this area typically must be cordoned off due to the potential presence of electrical hazards. When outlets and large electronic appliances come into contact with volumes of water, they create a major hazard to anyone not protected by specialized clothing like that worn by SERVPRO technicians.

Mold

If our inspectors find a mold of a dangerous species or spread, they may create a quarantine area to stop its spread and shield residents from potential health effects the mold can cause. We are well-qualified to handle mold situations, so worry not if we do find a problem. We simply incorporate mold remediation into the present cleanup job and keep moving.

Septic Tank Spillage or Other Waste Hazards

When a septic tank has spilled, or some other disaster involving biological waste has occurred, we typically bar access to this area to prevent contamination from occurring. Tainted water sources carry large quantities of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can create serious health effects even through simple proximity. If you know that your septic tank has ruptured or spilled, be sure to inform our personnel before they arrive so adequate preparations can be made.

Structural Damage

More severe water damage has the potential to cause structural damage to the home. If our trained inspectors find signs of this, they may ask you and your family to vacate the area immediately. Structural collapse can happen suddenly, and without prompting, so it is best to stay away from the at-risk area until we have had enough time to ensure its safety.

SERVPRO of Visalia is trained and equipped to deal with water damage of any variety. Call us at the first sign of trouble at (559)635-4292.

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Visalia to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (559) 635-4292

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Visalia for mold remediation services.

Cleaning Secrets

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

The secret to cleaning

The reality is there is no secret to cleaning, however the art of cleaning is all about being thorough. No matter what you intend to clean there are some key factors one must consider; what products are safe to use on the surface, can you actually get to the surface to be cleaned, wet or dry cleaning, what are you trying to remove?

Wet cleaning is the most effective but not all materials can withstand the moisture used so you may need to dry clean. Dry cleaning does not necessarily mean that there are no liquids involved just that there is no water used. You may be able to use solvents or scrub with a brush and vacuum to remove the soiling.

When wet cleaning real the label on the product you are using, that is were the secrets are held. Manufactures of cleaning products test the solutions in many ways to find out what works best and will give you the information on the directions of the container. If your solution is too strong or too weak it will not work as good as it is designed to.

In summary take your time and follow the label directions and remember that routine cleaning is faster and easier than letting things build up over time.

Staying safe

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

Staying safe during the pandemic

It is important that we all do our best to protect ourselves and others with the widespread reach of COVID19.

Keeping the germs at bay.

Remembering your mask, gloves and sanitizer.

The basics still work with this virus.

Cleanliness is the first line of defense with any illness or potential contaminate.  Regular cleaning of our hands and frequently touched surfaces can and will do more to slow the spread of viruses than anything else.

Hand and face coverings help when used correctly, keep your masks clean or use disposable face coverings. Gloves will also help when out and about. Take them off when returning to your vehicle making sure to turn them inside out without touching the outside of the gloves and properly dispose.

Keep yourself in good physical condition! Drink plenty of water and get your rest, you are at your best and the most resistant to infection or illness when you are healthy. The added bonus is a boost to your mental wellbeing when you are rested especially if you add physical exercise to your routine.

Stay safe, Stay healthy, and Stay happy!

Rest Assured

When a little unseen water turns into a big problem

1/21/2020 (Permalink)

When you have a small leak or a little bit of water that is left unattended to it can turn into a BIG problem.  One of the most important factors that can turn a little water damage into a mold issue is time. When materials are left wet for an extended period of time the situation can deteriorate very quickly. We lose the opportunity to restore items affected by the water damage and often have to change gears into a removal process due to the effects of time. Mold is a scary word when it comes to your home or business, the good thing is that mold is avoidable with a fast response to water damage. This is why we are on call 24/7 to respond to your water emergency so we can prevent mold from ever happening. If the water damage was not found and mold has started, we are equipped with the trained staff and equipment to clean it up "Like it never even happened."

Avoiding Electrical Fires

1/21/2020 (Permalink)

Always unplug unused wires and plugs.

We all know that installing and maintaining a smoke detector is the best way to stay safe in case of a fire in your home, but you may be surprised to learn about the most common causes of electrical fires.  Here they are:

  1. Space heaters- Because space heaters are portable, many times people put them too close to combustible surfaces such as curtains, beds, clothing, chairs, couches and rugs. Coil space heaters are especially dangerous because the coils become so hot, they will almost instantaneously ignite any nearby flammable surface.
  2. Faulty outlets, appliances - Most electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets and old, outdated appliances. Never use an appliance with a worn or frayed cord which can send heat onto combustible surfaces like floors, curtains, and rugs that can start a fire.
  1. Light fixtures- Light fixtures, lamps and light bulbs are another common reason for electrical fires. Installing a bulb with a wattage that is too high for the lamps and light fixtures is a leading cause of electrical fires. Always check the maximum recommended bulb wattage on any lighting fixture or lamp and never go over the recommended amount. Extension cords - Misuse of extension cords are another electrical fire cause. Appliances should be plugged directly into an outlet and not plugged into an extension cord for any length of time. Only use extension cords as a temporary measure.
  1. Wiring- Outdated wiring often causes electrical fires. If a home is over 20 years old, it may not have the wiring capacity to handle the increased amounts of electrical appliances in today’s average home.

Be sure to check today and make sure none of these dangers are in your home. In the unfortunate case of a fire, the professionals at SERVPRO of Visalia are on-call 24 hours a day to help.

Mold problem?

11/7/2019 (Permalink)

In Tulare County, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Title: Conditions In Visalia and surrounding areas Might Be Right For Mold

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

IICRC Certified Firm

11/21/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Visalia is an IICRC firm. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

IICRC Certified Firms must

  • Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
  • Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
  • Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
  • Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
  • Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Visalia will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Do you have a Mold problem?

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation

Two easy maintenance tips for fall!

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

As much fun as summer can be, it has to end at some point. As the trees begin to change and the weather shifts from hot and humid to cool and crisp, it’s time to prepare for the onset of cooler months. Whether you’re ready for hot cocoa and sweaters or are still holding on to ice cream and swim suits, there’s a lot to do to get ready for the changing seasons.

  1. Inspect your roof
If you have a heavy rainstorm or a foot of snow, does your roof have what it takes to hold up? Before settling in for another chilly fall and a freezing winter take a look at your roof for weak spots or cracks in your shingles and granules. If you see anything that looks off or unstable, a roofer may be what your home needs to weather this winter’s storms.
  2. Clean out your gutters
As the leaves begin to turn, you know you’re only weeks away from them falling off entirely and stopping up your gutters. Before you find yourself with a big mess on your hands, take the time now to clean out your gutters and drainpipes to prevent the possibility of water damage and clogs. A clean early in the season may not be sufficient through the winter, but it will make sure you’re prepared for the harsher weather to come. Water damages can be caused by clogged drains or overflowing water to collect on your roof.

Preparing your house for fall may not be what you planned to do during your weekend, but it’s something you’ll thank yourself for later. With the right measures taken now, you and your family will be prepared to settle in for the fall and winter, no matter what may be coming your way!

Mold prevention tips

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a common household problem, developing in warm, damp environments. Mold can be colored green, purple, white, and orange. While mold plays an important role outside in the environment, breaking down dead plants, mold is unwelcome in homes.

Showers and bathrooms are a common location for mold to grow, but it is possible for mold to grow anywhere in a home. Mold can come inside a home from an outside growth through inadequately sealed windows or doors. Mold spores cannot be eliminated entirely, but they will not grow if the environment is dry and well ventilated. Mold growth can be prevented by ensuring if water damage occurs, clean up occurs quickly. Using air conditioners during humid seasons and exhaust fans in kitchen can help prevent mold from growing.

Other areas to monitor moisture to prevent mold growth: exterior walls and surfaces in need of insulation where condensation can build, air conditioner drip pans, check for leaks around refrigerator, ensure crawl spaces are well ventilated, and check for leaks around a tub.

These are a few simple tips for making sure mold is not growing in your home. If you do discover a mold growth, SERVPRO of Visalia provides mold remediation services for all types of residential and commercial properties.

6 top fire damage restoration tips

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

We’re not going to kid you. Fire damage restoration is tough work. People call SERVPRO of Visalia frequently to ask for advice on how to clean up after a fire.  Here are seven of the best tips we give people who ask about fire damage restoration.

Most people can put these tips into practice. But remember that fire damage restoration takes time, work, and skill. Realistically consider whether you want to try these ideas on your own or whether you’d be better off hiring highly trained restoration specialists who will guarantee their work.

  1. Remove Smoke Damage

With any fire you’ll have a degree of smoke damage to your walls, wall paper, and paint. If the smoke damage is not too serious, you should be able to scrub it clean with detergents and bleach. Soot from smoke damage is greasy stuff, so always try to dust as much of it off from a surface before trying to scrub the surface clean. Often, you’ll want to repaint, but make sure all surfaces are clean and dry before you paint.

  1. Limit Activity & Other Simple Fire Damage Restoration Steps

Until your house is restored, limit your activity and movement in the house. This helps prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets. Keep people’s hands clean so you don’t further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork. Protect your things by placing clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas. Before you clean know the best cleaning method for that particular cleaning job (one example: Clean and protect chrome with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.) Wash both sides of the leaves on your houseplants. Change your HVAC filter and tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

  1. Get Rid of Mold & Mildew

Firefighters are great. They save many a live and many a home. But they do introduce mold and mildew into houses when they must use water to extinguish the fire. SERVPRO of Visalia highly recommends you hire fire damage restoration professionals to deal with mold and mildew. Mold and mildew can cause serious health problems. It’s difficult for a nonprofessional to know for certain if he’s clean up all the areas affected by the mold and mildew. And mold and mildew can contaminate your furniture, carpets, clothing, mattresses, walls, and vents. The best thing you can do immediately is to air out every room and clean out all vents and filters.

  1. Replace Carpets. Clean And Dry Your Floors

Your floors and carpets end up absorbing the worst of the damage from all the water used to put out a fire. In almost every case, SERVPRO of Visalia recommends that you pull up any carpets that have water damage and replace them. Water can also seep underneath vinyl flooring and into the cracks in hardwood. You must address this. If you have experience with flooring, you can lift it up and clean under it. But you may want to call a professional fire damage restoration company to assist you.

  1. Avoid Smearing Soot Into Clothing

Cleaning smoke damage from clothing is one of the biggest jobs you’ll have after a fire. Make sure you don’t smear the greasy soot into the clothing or just throw the smoky clothes into the wash. Often times dry cleaning is the best bet, and you should ask around local dry cleaners to see if any have experience with post-fire laundry. Removing smoke odor is another issue and we’ve covered it in another blog post.

  1. Scrub, Soak, And Cleaning Dishes

Dishes are also important items to clean thoroughly after a fire because they will be in contact with your food. Scrub all dishes well, let them soak in a solution of bleach and water (2 tablespoons of bleach per gallon) for at least 20 minutes and scrub some more for safety. When in doubt, if a dish, pot, or pan won’t come clean, cut your losses and throw it out – especially rubber or wooden dishes that absorb smoke.

Preparation is a key component for making it through any size disaster, whether it's a small water leak, a large fire or an area flood. The best time for planning for such events is not when the event happens, but well before it happens. No one ever plans on a disaster, but you can plan for it. Now is the time to ask yourself, "Are you ready for whatever could happen?"

The SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile is a start up approach that provides the critical information needed to begin mitigation and recovery services. • Establishes your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider. You have a provider that is recognized as an industry leader and close by.
  • Identification of the line of command for authorizing work to begin. This saves time so we can begin the work of mitigating the damage which can save you time and money.

Should You Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned in Your Home?

7/19/2017 (Permalink)

Knowledge about the potential benefits and possible problems of air duct cleaning is limited. Since conditions in every home are different, it is impossible to generalize about whether or not air duct cleaning in your home would be beneficial.

If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Does Your Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/9/2016 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
